the stages
The itinerary winds along the gentle hills of Macerata always having in the background the panorama of the Sibillini mountains, called “The Blue Mountains” by the poet Leopardi. Here are the countries crossed:
1 - LORO PICENO
Loro Piceno is located along the right side of the Fiastra river valley. The town stretches along the gentle hillside, an excellent vantage point with the Sibillini Mountains in the background on one side and the coast on the other.
Loro Piceno is above all the town of Vino Cotto. Lo Vìcotto, as they say in the village, is a sweet and strong wine, with an alcohol content ranging from 12° to 14°, with a typical amber colour a ‘occhiu de gallu’. The wine is fruity with hints of hazelnut. The tradition of cooking the must is very old and is still intact.
2 - SANT'ANGELO IN PONTANO
Sant’Angelo in Pontano lies on the ridge of a rise in the middle of the Ete Morto and Tenna valleys. It borders the provinces of Macerata and Fermana. The historic centre of Sant’Angelo enjoys a fairytale-like panorama. Sant’Angelo in Pontano counts among its citizens a very special personage, St Nicholas of Tolentino. The saint was born in Sant’Angelo in Pontano in 1245. In addition to his devout life as a preacher, St Nicholas is associated with many miracles and particular anecdotes
3 - GUALDO
Between the valleys of the Salino and Tennacolo torrents, lies Gualdo at an altitude of 650 metres above sea level. Gualdo’s territory is rich in history, and in the past there were several castles that have now disappeared: the castle of Cardine, which gives its name to a district; the castle Sismondo or Sigismondo, which in 1300 was still an armed stronghold and was donated in 1445 by Pope Eugene IV to Pandolfo Taliamonte or Talamonti d’Ascoli, a meritorious person of the Apostolic See, and purchased by the city of Fermo in 1447
4 - SARNANO
The historic centre of Sarnano rests gently on the hill, in front of it the Sibillini mountains provide a pastel-coloured backdrop. The greenery all around the historic centre is fresh and preponderant. Sarnano has always been inextricably linked to its territory rich in springs, springs and woods. From the ancient peoples, Umbrians and Picenes until the Middle Ages, passing through the Romans, all have appreciated the place and nature to the point of creating an authoritative centre in relation to the neighbouring countries. The world wars left deep wounds, and in the second half of the 20th century the town made a comeback due to tourism.
5 - URBISAGLIA
Urbisaglia dominates the Fiastra river valley. The territory of the town stretches gently between fields, vineyards and archaeological sites. The historic centre of Urbisaglia is on a hill, as are many towns in the area. However, the first Urbis Salvia developed in the flat area close to the Fiastra torrent. If you drive along State Road 78 Picena in the stretch between the hamlets of Maestà and Convento, you can admire various archaeological excavation sites dating back to Roman times. Rome was the capital of the world and Urbisaglia, then called Urbis Salvia, was an important centre. It was founded as a colony in the 2nd century BC. It was enlarged and developed in the Augustan and Tiberian ages.
